A major turning point in Nigeria’s educational history has been reached with President Bola Tinubu’s official approval of Yaba College of Technology’s (YABATECH) long-awaited conversion to a university.
During a visit to the university, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa announced the approval, citing YABATECH’s solid academic foundation—which includes more than 200 staff members with PhDs—as a major consideration. He urged the university to include cutting-edge subjects like artificial intelligence, robotics, and coding in its curriculum, underscoring the government’s dedication to innovation, technology, and skill development.

In order to boost its expansion, Dr. Alausa also urged YABATECH to fortify industry alliances, market research, and take advantage of alumni endowments. Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, the rector, and Prof. Funso Afolabi, the chairman of the governing council, praised the development and promised to maintain excellence while pursuing the required government assistance. It is anticipated that the National Assembly would shortly be presented with a legislative bill that will formally establish YABATECH’s new status.
