Aminata Jaiteh, a distinguished student from The Gambia, has graduated from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom with a master’s degree in gender and development studies. The renowned Chevening Scholarship, a fully funded program backed by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the UK government, enabled her academic journey. She moved to the UK in 2023 to continue her education, and a year later she graduated from the Institute of Development Studies at the university, realising a lifelong desire.

In retrospect, Aminata characterised her time studying in the UK as one of the most demanding yet fulfilling periods of her life. She had to adjust to a new location, deal with harsh weather, and even lose two important tasks before they were due because of a laptop accident. She persevered in the face of these obstacles by depending on willpower, faith, and optimism.
Aminata views her accomplishment as demonstrating the strength of women and the force of tenacity in addition to obtaining a degree. She has pleasant memories of visiting the UK’s diverse cultural landscape, attending early morning lectures, participating in thought-provoking feminist conversations, eagerly anticipating grades, and commemorating milestones.
As a proud graduate of Chevening, she currently works as a Gender and Development Specialist at the top-ranked Development Studies university in the world. In addition to the kindness of the Chevening Awards, which enabled her academic path, she credits her achievement to the steadfast support of her family, friends, mentors, lecturers, supervisors, and mentors.
Aminata is excited to use the skills and information she has acquired to promote significant change in the areas of gender and development in the future. She is ready to leave a lasting impression on social progress and gender equality worldwide with her newly acquired knowledge and self-assurance.
