Mathematics Graduate Overcomes The Odds, receives First-Class.

Abiodun Ismail Jamiu has overcome all hurdles to get First-Class Honours in Mathematics Education from Ekiti State University (EKSU), in a remarkable story of tenacity and academic achievement. Students going through comparable difficulties can find inspiration in his journey, which is characterised by setbacks and perseverance.

The tale of Jamiu is not one of quick success. He attended Arabic school for five more years after finishing secondary school in 2015 before being accepted into EKSU in 2019. His early challenges were apparent; he struggled to acclimatise in his first year of university and received a JAMB score of 198 out of 400. But he changed the course of his academic career by persistent willpower, self-control, and hard work.

Jamiu graduated with an exceptional CGPA of 4.65/5.00 after gradually improving his performance from an initial GPA of 3.83. He was the second-best graduating student in the Faculty of Science Education for the 2022–2023 session, demonstrating his accomplishments beyond the classroom.

Jamiu’s outstanding traits are further demonstrated by his leadership positions and extracurricular activities. He led his peers academically as the Session Class Governor.

  • The esteemed position of Departmental General Secretary Elect for the 2022–2023 academic year.
  • President of the Muslim Students Association (FEMSA) at the Faculty of Education.
  • For three sessions in a row, the director of Mosque Ummah (MSSN EKSU).

He also helped others succeed academically by mentoring more than 150 students and tutoring more than 1,000 pupils across seven faculties. In addition, he worked towards professional certifications, becoming recognised as an Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) professional student and Associate of Accounting Technicians (AAT).

When he looks back on his accomplishments, Jamiu credits his perseverance, faith, and the unwavering support of his family, friends, and lecturers. His goals are not limited to earning a first-class degree; he is now planning to pursue postgraduate studies and become a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) in order to pursue a career in finance, mathematics, and data analysis.

Jamiu’s story demonstrates that obstacles are but stepping stones to greatness and is a monument to the strength of perseverance and self-improvement. Students that aspire to overcome obstacles and attain academic success can find encouragement in his narrative.

“Success is about perseverance and growth, not where you start.” Ismail Jamiu, Abiodun.
