10 Courses you should NOT study in Nigeria
Hi, whilst I do not mean to say the courses I’ll be listing are a total waste of school time, I consider spending 4 – 5 years on these courses too loud. It’s just my opinion but really investing 5 years of your life on something has really got to worth it. For goodness sake! I mean what’s the average life expectancy of a Nigerian who can live only once?
I understand the place of passion and give exemption to passionate folks. However, in Nigeria, we both know that most people are really onto a university degree for a food/comfort ticket. The ish is that these kinds of courses are for the most part given to students who do not hit the cut off mark for their program of choice. So if you have no passion for these programs but a sincere search for a better 5 years ROI, you should think thrice before accepting this admissions.

10 Courses you should NOT study in Nigeria
1. Music
Except you really want to learn the fundamentals of music, I consider spending 5 years in the university to study this course a waste of life-time. Don’t say hanhan, you know what I’m saying is fact. Most of the celebrated musicians in Nigeria have no music degree. The few who do, got it whilst already in limelight. I do not need to site examples and I’m not telling you not to study music. I’m saying “are passionate about learning rudiments?
2. Plant/Seed Technology and related Blah blah.
I do not know any plant technology company in Nigeria at the moment. I know other continents with the exemption of Africa are very involved with this. So if you are not looking at starting such company in Nigeria or relocating abroad to join like-minded technologists, don’t waste your life-time. Well except you can wait for up to perhaps 50 years after graduation.
3. Christian Religious Study/ IRK/Sharia Law
Firstly, Christianity is not a religion, it’s a relationship. I can’t say much of Islam, I’m a christian. Secondly, since Christianity is a relationship, it’s not strictly guided by “all things being equal” – science, logic or reasoning. If you want to know more about God, his Word, and all the other interesting things of the spiritual life, you’ll most likely take the journey alone.
4. Social studies, Home Economics, Physical Education, etc
You see, these courses are hands-on and must be taught experimentally – Not textbook teaching! Apart from the fact that this country currently have few or no jobs to offer you for 5 years of tough learning, with exception of teaching, the pay is ridiculous for a 1825 days of mental, financial and physical commitment.
5. Botany, Zoology
Let me start with zoology. How many zoos do we have in this country and what animals are there? What recent journal or television series do you see monthly relating to these two courses in Nigeria? Talk to me, is it worth it or are you doing it for PALI sake? Face it and decide before taking your life-time decision.
6. Horticulture, Anthropology, Archaeology.
Big terms! I underlined a link to these terms for your comprehension. In short, these words relate to the study of flowers, humans, etcetera. sounds nice right? yeah but it’s not cool that there are no jobs except you’ll create one. In my head right now are images of road-side horticulturists. I reject that being you, they don’t make good money but if you combine school’s capacity building and entrepreneurial courses to this programs, I think, you’ll hit it. After all, “nothing is new, creativity and innovation makes the difference“.
7. Library science.
No way, I’m writing nothing about this. What are you going to be learning for 4 years? C’mon man!
8. Childhood Education.
No deal for me. If you do take it though, Just finish up to create or partner with some tv/radio shows. You’d have a cool nature, so you’ll probably get people to listen to your video/audio podcasts. Otherwise, start a daycare/nanny/baby center. Frankly, the labor market is got nothing better for you.
9. History
Really? the world is running forward at an alarming speed but you say that I should spend 5 years of my life looking backward. I’m too smart for that, aren’t you! Africa and waste are synonyms! please DON’T DO IT!
10. What again?
It’s over 10 listed, count it!
Conclusion:
Too much already said, It boils down to you. What’s it for you? Burning vision or craving comfort? the euphoria for an undergraduate or that NYSC green Khaki or what? Trust me, euphoria will wane from 200 level, second semester. With vision, you can set the pace in this world. If comfort is the goal for you, DON’T waste your life-time, go for the money. To those with the burning vision, it’s going to take a lot from you, but folks like you got us to where we are now. Salute!
