17-Year-Old Girl $9.7M Scholarship

Tatyana Alves, 17, received $9.7 million in scholarships from 72 US institutions. Marygrove High School in Detroit graduated Tatyana among the first 95 high graders.

Tatyana was named “Most Positive” by her peers for her positive outlook and academic success. I just want others to succeed. Positive thinking helped me find my mission, and I think I’ve influenced many people, she added.

The new Marygrove High School, which fosters critical thinking and community service, welcomed Tatyana and 119 other students in 2019. Her social justice and engineering concentration led to success and scholarship offers.

An application entrance-examination school challenges me, which I like. I think application high schools provide many chances, Tatyana stated.

She thanks her mother, Acquanetta Windham, for her optimistic approach and will to succeed. She became a sales associate as a reward, gaining confidence and independence.

Tatyana obtained her driver’s license and a car to commute to school and work, allowing her to gain independence. “When I was in 11th grade, around the age of 15 turning 16, I realized that it was time for me to transition into adulthood,” she expressed.

Tatyana thanks her instructors, friends, and classmates for their help. After receiving several scholarship offers and college acceptances, she picked Eastern Michigan University to pursue business administration.
