2025 Mass Failure: ASUU-UNN Threatens Action Against JAMB.

The University of Nigeria Nsukka UNN chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU has announced plans to sue the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board JAMB for the widespread failures in the 2025 UTME. The ASUU claims that candidates from the South East and Lagos, which have a high Igbo population, were disproportionately impacted.

ASUU-UNN Chairman Comrade Óyibo Eze told reporters in Nsukka that the failing trend seemed to be an intentional effort to prevent students from the area from getting into universities. Citing public and parent objections, he emphasised that no student at certain institutions, including as University Secondary School Nsukka, received a score higher than 200 out of 400.

While other areas get admitted with scores as low as 120, applicants from the South East often need significantly higher marks, according to Eze, who criticised JAMB for having what he called uneven admission requirements. He said that if JAMB did not examine the results and return scores to worthy applicants, ASUU would file a lawsuit.

He also referred to the situation as an intellectual injustice and urged the governors of the South East to step in. Eze contended that innocent applicants shouldn’t be punished due to problems at certain testing locations, even if he acknowledged the need of addressing exam misconduct.

The warning comes after JAMB acknowledged that technological issues affected thousands of results, with more than 1.5 million of the almost 2 million applicants receiving test scores below 200.
