Aisha Widad Yahaya, 24, became Bayero University Kano’s first law student in 35 years to graduate with first class honours. A mother, a wife, and 18th of 25 siblings, achieved greatness through resilience, family support, and commitment.
Aisha was born in Ungoggo LGA, Kano State, on July 3, 2001. She attended Al-Azhar Primary School and Musa Ilyasu College. Her late father, noted historian Professor Dahiru Yahaya, influenced her to choose law over sciences, which shaped her career.

Her experience at BUK was unusual. Aisha commuted significant miles daily to balance her academic and personal obligations as a non-residential student. In her fourth year, she married and had her first child, making things harder. She struggled to balance pregnancy, marriage, and law school, but her husband, a BUK instructor, and mentors and family supported her.
In her second year, she realised she had a perfect 5.0 GPA, proving she could get First Class honours. From then on, she focused on that goal and never looked back.
Her husband’s comfort, Barrister Abba Hikima’s tutelage, and her lecturers and siblings’ support helped her succeed. Aisha’s level coordinator, Asma’u Aminu Sani, called her story “a testament to the power of determination,” congratulating her for overcoming obstacles and inspiring other young ladies to dream big.
Her First Class degree is more than a credential to Aisha—it represents the strength to overcome challenges and optimism for women pursuing academic and personal greatness.
“This isn’t just my victory,” she said. “It’s for every girl who dreams—even when the odds are high.”
