37 students at Nasarawa State University in Keffi were rusticated for one academic term for allegedly participating in a WhatsApp group that was established to organise a protest against the institution’s decision to start a third semester.
The students were charged with “criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance of public peace, and cyber-stalking,” according to official documents that were obtained on Monday. At its 123rd Regular Meeting on October 31, 2024, the university’s Senate authorised their rustication in response to suggestions made by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

The impacted students have been instructed to avoid university property unless authorised in writing. In the first semester of the 2025–2026 school year, they will be permitted to return, but they will need to bring a parent or guardian and a letter of undertaking attesting to their good behaviour.
Important university administrators received a letter confirming the disciplinary penalty, signed by Registrar Dr. Bala Ahmed, mentioning their role in planning the demonstration.
Before disciplinary action was taken, the students were given a chance to defend themselves, according to an internal memo from Dogo Bitrus Moni, Secretary of the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
Before reaching a judgement, the committee discussed their role in the disturbances that followed the September 5, 2024, election of the Students’ Union Government (SUG).
