The 54-Year-Old Mother Who Earned Her Master’s 22 Years After Her First Degree Won Best Student Award
Hafizah Osman, 54, earned a master’s degree from Griffith University in Queensland, Australia, 22 years after completing her bachelor’s. She was also the university’s top graduate.
In 2017, Hafizah became the head of e-learning at the National University of Singapore after 21 years as a multimedia producer and news editor.
Hafizah returned to school in 2021 to get a master’s degree in Learning and Professional Development (MLPD) from Griffith University and the Institute for Adult Learning in Singapore to succeed in her new profession. She graduated and was the highest student in her class.
Hafizah said he was first worried about the time commitment of juggling employment and school. Considering her history as a part-time student without family obligations, she realized the hardship of her current effort.
“I had some reservations, especially about time commitment, before I started. As a former part-time student without family obligations, she recognized the challenges.
Hafizah received her bachelor’s degree in Language and Linguistics from the Open University in the UK while working as a multimedia producer for Singapore Press Holdings from 1996 to 1999.
The job significance of her studies exceeded her concerns about learning at an older age. Her family, particularly her husband and children, inspired and supported Hafizah.
“My husband is my biggest cheerleader. My children inspired me when they studied Covid-19, she remarked.
The COVID-19 outbreak caused Hafizah to study online for her master’s. She struggled to maintain ties and provide everyone with the essential information as cohort leader. In her second year, she and her classmates could exchange ideas and learn from one other.
Hafizah stressed lifelong learning. “Learning is essential because the world is changing. You can’t afford to be left behind since it changes every second, she remarked.
