60-Year-Old Farouk Sanni Bags First Class In Sociology From UI, Wins 8 Awards

The best-graduating student from the University of Ibadan’s Department of Sociology is 60-year-old Farouk Sanni.

Retired banker Farouk Sanni claimed he felt satisfied with his sociological studies and that they had helped him understand why people act the way they do. He had taken an uncle’s required accounting course at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife.

During the 75th University of Ibadan convocation event, Alhaji, who is affectionately referred to as the best-graduating student, shared his own experiences.

After retiring from UBA, he said, he took up the challenge to maintain his health and continue his desire to understand human behavior. He also said that in order to be admitted to study sociology, he had to write the JAMB.

Sanni claimed he wrote the JAMB with his child, who is currently a law student at the University of Ibadan. Sanni received eight accolades for the accomplishment.

It can be quite difficult to study with someone the same age as your children, but I was gracious enough to make accommodations for what transpired, he added. Some people referred to me as Mr. Sanni, others as Daddy, and yet others would even say, “He may be my father, but he’s not mine.” Despite my advanced age, I managed to maintain my focus despite the multitude of experiences I had.

Dr. Oludayo Tade, a department instructor, spoke on Mr. Sanni’s accomplishment and mentioned that the best-graduating student in the social science faculty had a chair that he attached to a tree so that he could read under it.

The speaker stated: “Mallam F. K. Sanni, a 60-year-old man, graduated from the University of Ibadan with a FIRST CLASS in Sociology, making him the best student in his class and winning eight awards.”

He currently has two undergraduate children attending UI. He dropped and picked up his two kids from lecture halls until he graduated, and on Saturdays and Sundays, I would usually find him reading under the tree.

“I met him on Ileya day at the regular reading area beneath a faculty tree. He had brought a chair that was secured to the tree, which he used to read everytime he visited. Alhaji ni Ojo Ileya, I asked him in jest. He responded, “Oga, I have bought everything they needed for them oooo.” I’ll be distracted if I stay with them, Sir.
