US-Based African Lady Acquires School Where She Was Once a Student

Summary: Lucy Opit’s journey took her from being a student at Midwest Barber College in the US to becoming the proud owner of the same institution in just one year. Her remarkable story began in 2014 when she enrolled at Midwest Barber College to become a skilled barber. Little did she know that fate had a surprising twist in store for her.

When the school faced the possibility of closure and was selling its equipment, Lucy initially intended to purchase the barbering tools. However, after a conversation with the college’s owner, she decided to take a bold step and acquire the entire institution instead of starting a new one from scratch. She shared, “I had just gone through a divorce, so I used my settlement money along with some of my savings as the initial capital.”

By 2015, Lucy had obtained her barbering license from the Kansas State Board of Barbering, not only allowing her to practice as a barber but also to own the very college where she had once been a student. Her journey was nothing short of remarkable as she transformed into not only a skilled barber but also the proud owner of Manhattan, KS’s sole ethnic barber shop.

In 2018, Lucy achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first black woman in Kansas to own a nationally accredited barber college. Her inspirational story highlights the power of determination, resilience, and seizing unexpected opportunities.
