On February 11, 2024, during the Federal University of Lafia in Nasarawa State’s sixth, seventh, and eighth convocation ceremonies, Miss Olaleye Florence Michael of Oyo State was named the overall best graduating student.
She received a 4.91 out of a possible 5.00 CGPA for her B.A. in Philosophy. She is the greatest graduating student in the university’s history as well as the best graduate student of her cohort.
MY TESTIMONY
Never deny anything by delaying. Yes, the fattest bone will be consumed by a patient dog.
I am the result of diligence, grace, endurance, and patience.
Giving God the glory is all I can do as I think back on my history.
I started my path into higher education 13 years ago, following my secondary school graduation. I had to take many O-level exams. Writing five separate O-level exams was such a painful experience, but despite the unpleasant circumstances, it taught me how to work hard on my studies.
In 2012, I was accepted to study statistics at the Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State (OND). Due to frequent strikes and other internal school difficulties, a voyage I had anticipated taking two years turned out to take me nearly four years to complete. I received an upper credit when I graduated from Federal Polytechnic Ede in 2016.
After completing my OND program, I learned about the prestigious Federal University of Lafia and made the trip to Abuja for a year-long internship.
I was accepted to study mathematics at the Federal University of Lafia in Nasarawa State in 2017, but I was later offered a Philosophy course since I did not meet the prerequisites for admission to the mathematics program. I turned down the offer at first, but God told me to move through with the philosophy. Thank God I followed the instructions.
I should also mention that the same year, I was accepted to the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa in Nasarawa State to study statistics. On the other hand, I was advised by a Fulafia admissions officer to postpone my enrollment for a year to give myself more time to fulfill the prerequisites for studying mathematics. However, I might not have been able to have the same influence in the fields of mathematics and statistics as I did in philosophy if I had followed FULafia’s advice and postponed my entrance, and then pursued an HND in Statistics at FPN. My academic progress, which was already modest, may have been even slower than needed.
However, making the transition from science to art was not simple. I have to become serious about learning how to read large volumes and reviews. I started using my background in independent study and research at that point.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ASUU strike, I was not able to graduate until 2021 when I should have.
To the glory of God, I received a 4.91 out of 5.00 CGPA when I graduated from the Federal University of Lafia in October 2021, ranking first among my peers, teachers, and department as a whole.
May I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to my family, especially my siblings, and to everyone who has helped me succeed in any way? God bless every one of you.
I also want to urge everyone who is facing difficulties, whether they be academic or not, to keep going instead of giving up and to calmly turn to God.
The Federal University of Lafia in Nasarawa State, Nigeria is celebrating the combined convocation of its class of 2020, 2021, and 2022 today, February 10, 2024. I was honored to give a farewell speech at this magnificent occasion.
Glory to God!
