Significant revisions to the standards and requirements for nurses and midwives seeking verification of their credentials for registration with overseas nursing boards have been released by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). With this thorough redesign, the system should be streamlined and candidates should be well-prepared for a smooth verification process.
Important Procedures for Starting Verification
Portal for Online Applications
Applicants must visit and log in to https://licence.nmcn.gov.ng/ in order to start the process. Clicking on the relevant link on the portal will launch the verification application.
Application Fee non-refundable
Every verification application must include a non-refundable charge. This charge covers courier services to the foreign nursing board, the applicant’s place of employment, and their training facilities.
Qualifications
To guarantee that only eligible applicants move on with the verification process, the NMCN has established precise eligibility requirements:
- Experience Following Qualification: Candidates must have at least two years of experience following their permanent practice license’s issue, counting from that date. Applications that are submitted with temporary licenses will be rejected right away.
- Letter of Good Standing: The CEO of the applicant’s most recent or present employer and the last nursing school they attended will be personally contacted by the Council to get this letter. It’s important to note that candidates must send these letters straight to the Registrar/CEO of the NMCN; they cannot submit them themselves.
- Active Practice License: Candidates must have a practicing license that is currently valid, with at least six months left on it before it expires.
- Registration certificate: The only certificates that will be accepted are the registration certificate(s). Registration notifications are not acceptable.
Application Results and Schedule
Through email and their dashboard on the NMCN site, applicants will receive timely notifications regarding the status of their verification applications.
Crucial Points to Remember
- Processing Time: It will require at least six months to process an application for verification.
- Complete Documentation: Every piece of documentation needs to be accurately submitted and complete. Applications that are not complete will not be handled.
- Date of Implementation: On March 1, 2024, the updated guidelines will go into effect. Applications received before this date will be handled by the earlier policies.
- Nursing Institutions’ Responsibilities: It is the responsibility of nursing institution heads to distribute this information so that nurses are informed of the updated protocols.
Finally
A critical first step toward bringing Nigerian nursing practice and education into compliance with international standards is the NMCN’s revised verification procedures. Nurses and midwives who wish to work overseas can expedite the verification process by following these updated protocols. To ensure a seamless verification process, the NMCN recommends all candidates to carefully review and abide by these guidelines. Your collaboration is essential to advancing and preserving the standard of nursing practice and education worldwide.
