WAEC Gives Reasons for Introducing a Computer-Based Testing Option.

A major change in exam format has been announced by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC): applicants for the November 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will have the option of either Computer-Based Tests (CBT) or Paper-Based Tests.

At a press conference in Ibadan, Dr. Amos Dangut, the Head of WAEC’s National Office in Nigeria, announced this decision and emphasized the reasoning for the change.

Dr. Dangut claims that the effective administration of the inaugural CB-WASSCE edition in January/February, which revealed enhanced performance and a noteworthy drop in malpractice instances from 5% to 0.8%, is what prompted the introduction of the computer-based format.

According to The Guardian, participants, especially private candidates taking the November WASSCE, would now have the option of choosing between the CB-WASSCE and the conventional paper-based exam.

This program is in line with WAEC’s overarching goal of increasing access to computer-based exams, particularly in remote locations. In cooperation with the federal government and other stakeholders, Dr. Dangut outlined ongoing efforts to give schools the required infrastructure and training, with the eventual goal of converting all schools to computer-based assessment.

In comparison to the previous year, the examination, which took place in January and February, produced improved results, with a notable drop in malpractices from 5% to 0.8%. “We are currently preparing for the next private candidates’ examination, which will take place in October and November. Candidates will have the option of using the computer-based approach or the conventional pen and paper method,” Dangut stated. Speaking further, he said that the program’s goal was to provide computer-based testing to remote areas.

We intend to work with the federal government and other partners to eventually provide computer-based exams for all schools. He added, “We are also working on giving schools the facilities and training they need to support this transition.”

I sincerely appreciate your reading. We would be grateful if you could forward this to your family and friends.
