Laboratory Safety Rules for you

Laboratory Safety Rules for you

Bishop David Oyedepo, the leading pastor of the Living Faith Ministries always say “We walk by common sense, we run by principles but we fly by instruction”. That’s right! In the laboratory world, common sense and opinions is irrelevant when it comes to safety. Instruction rocks!

Here are my 10 Laboratory Safety Rules that could save your health

1. No Horseplay

It’s fun but costly. Accidents are usually unforeseen. You don’t want to wish you hadn’t made that move.

2. Stay conscious

We all get tired after a long day of class work and could get drowsy as soon as we get quiet. Its natural, but a lab safety no-no. Get your butt out to refresh. I suggest you get yourself home.

3. No Food or Drinks

I almost drank acid once, base severally. Maybe you too. Liquid bottles are quite identical in the laboratory and could be very confusing. Better safe than sorry.

4. Dress the Lab way

I remember taking off my lab coat and safety kits on my way out of the lab premises only to be urgently requested to assist a friend unlatch his torrid pressure pot, that encounter landed me in the ICU for several months. Prevention is wiser than cure.

5. Don’t operate equipment you’ve not learnt to

When you see this warning on lab walls, it really is not for the safety of the equipment as it is for you. For example, It costed my uncle a surgery on his face with his some of his teeth knocked out.

6. Don’t sniff, taste, or touch dangerous stuffs

Yea, you’ve done it before and nothing happened. What of if something did happen? Your fresh face, hairy hands – all gone!

7. Label Everything Appropriately

Label everything appropriately, you don’t want to make a fool of yourself.

8. Ask Questions

Before you add acids to water or hot liquid, ask the lab technician. By the way, don’t you add acids to water or hot liquids. Lab techies are there as guides, ask them!

9. Avoid clutters

From with your dangling hair, flying or loose dress to your work station, make sure everything is in firm place. Books and electronic gadgets spread over your work area is unethical. You’re not in control that way.

10. Understand signs

A standard lab have wall signs and instructions. There are also signs on lab chemical bottles, tables and equipment. You must understand them and operate as instructed.

11. Don’t form superpowers, it’s 3D

Remember my opening paragraph. Bishop David Oyedepo is right!

Makes sense?

Well I’m David, and I think I always make sense
