33 Nigerians Receive $2.92 Million in U.S. Scholarships

The scholarship program has awarded $2.92 million in full scholarships to 33 Nigerian students for higher education at American universities and colleges for the 2024/2025 academic session.

The Opportunity Funds Programme of the United States Consulate General in Lagos awarded the scholarships to increase access to U.S. higher education for exceptionally qualified international students facing financial constraints.

A total of 33 students, consisting of 10 undergraduates and 23 graduates, will be studying a wide range of subjects, including biomedical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, earth and planetary sciences, organic and medicinal chemistry, as well as civil, construction, and environmental engineering.

The selection procedure was very difficult, and the students were granted financial assistance that covered the costs of standardized examinations, application fees, U.S. visa and SEVIS fees, as well as plane travel to the United States. According to the Consulate, EducationUSA advisors provided students with regular meetings, seminars, and boot camps to assist them with the application process.

During a ceremony in Lagos for the students who were going to the United States, Consul General Will Stevens urged them to fully use the resources available at American institutions and actively participate in different groups and clubs to enhance their foreign experience.

During the next autumn season, you will be among a population of more than 17,000 Nigerian students who are now pursuing their studies in the United States. Congratulations for successfully navigating the rigorous U.S. college and university admissions process. We are enthusiastic about what lies ahead for you. “You have demonstrated exceptional performance in Nigeria, and I have full confidence that you will continue to achieve academic success,” said Stevens.

The scholarship fully funds Chigozie Odo, one of the beneficiaries, for a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of South Carolina. His primary study during his doctorate will focus on immunotherapy, aiming to discover long-term solutions for cancer treatment. Odo, who experienced the unfortunate loss of his father and the lone provider for his family during his second year at university, expressed appreciation towards the U.S. government for the assistance offered via the Opportunity Funds Programme.

“The realization of my aspiration to study in the United States, which previously appeared unattainable, has now become a tangible fact,” he said.
