UI Delays Medical Graduate Certificates

UI Delays Medical Graduate Certificates for Two Years, Stranding Students

Graduates from the University of Ibadan’s College of Medicine and Dentistry are experiencing substantial delays in obtaining their diplomas, which is greatly impeding their career advancement.

The class of 2022, consisting of 208 graduates in the fields of medicine, surgery, and dentistry, has seen significant impact. Officials awarded only 75 certificates, leaving 133 graduates uncertain about their status.

A disgruntled graduate said that several friends discussed the issue informally with university personnel, but despite repeated assurances, they have not resolved the issue. “They persistently request our return the subsequent month,” he said.

After graduating, the students received temporary licenses to complete their one-year housemanship. However, in order to secure permanent licenses from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), they need to provide their university diplomas.

“Although we finished our housemanship in December of last year, obtaining our certificates has been a protracted matter,” the graduate said.

The graduates of the MBBS 2022 and BDS 2023 classes sent a letter to the university administration on July 11, 2024, articulating the difficulties arising from the delay in receiving their certificates and the consequential hindrance to their professional advancement.

A graduate expressed a strong opinion that the University of Illinois is squandering their time and potential. They pointed out the lack of options for further studies and the detrimental impact on mental well-being.

Despite these complaints, the University of Ibadan’s administration has not resolved the matter. This causes many graduates to feel unsure about their career prospects.
