Amari, 17, Wins $9.2 Million in Scholarships to 162 U.S. Universities After Grafting with 4.62 GPA
Amari Shepherd, 17, is the valedictorian of Frederick A. Douglass High School in New Orleans with a 4.62 GPA.
Her outstanding academic record won her $9.2 million in scholarships from 162 US institutions and colleges.
In addition to her high school certificate, Amari got an associate degree from Bard Early College.
She submitted her credentials, including her book “Thirteen,” to every institution or university that waived the application price to get these scholarships. She maximized her prospects by using Niche, an online network for eligible students to apply directly.
Amari received a full-ride scholarship to Spelman College, her favorite school, after being waitlisted by an Ivy League institution.
Amari reflected on her achievement, saying, “My mom always told me to play my role and everything else would fall into place, and that’s exactly what happened.
Their full ride means I’ll attend my dream school for free.Amari wants to study political science as a path to law school and the Supreme Court.
Her father and grandmother, who died from COVID-19, encouraged her to work for a more fair and equal world.
In their honor, Amari said, “Education meant everything to them, so I didn’t really have a choice but to do well in school. It made me feel like my future work is larger than myself.”
