Brilliant Nigerian Woman Breaks World Record, First Black Woman to Earn Cybernetics PhD
Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua, a bright Nigerian, is the first black woman to acquire a cybernetics doctorate.
After graduating from Reading University, UK, engineering professor Rose became the first Black woman to get a Ph.D. in cybernetics.
A bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria, started her on her historic path.
She subsequently earned a master’s in Mobile Satellite and Communications Engineering from Surrey University in the UK before starting her cybernetics PhD.
Cybernetics studies how computers and electronics exchange information compared to the brain and nervous system.
First Ph.D. supervisor Prof. Kevin Warwick, the first human cyborg, helped her achieve the PhD.
Rose loved engineering and technology as a child in Nigeria, but the tradition discouraged women from studying in male-dominated disciplines like engineering. This idea motivated her to get many engineering degrees and associated courses. Rose has over two decades of engineering and STEM teaching experience in the US and Europe.
Rose selected cybernetics to build technologies that help society and mankind because she wants to better people’s lives.
She said she broke a record but wants to improve the world. Her current position is engineering professor at Ohlone College in Fremont, California.
In January, she helped Tesla grow its Employee Education Assistance (EEA) program as the College’s Smart Manufacturing Technology Program’s Founding Program Lead.
