The 43-year-old blind man who taught to pay for school graduates and wins best student award.
William Mapfumo, a 43-year-old blind man from Masvingo, Zimbabwe, graduated with honors from Zimbabwe Open University as the top student in his class despite major hurdles.
Mapfumo, who taught to pay for his studies, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and Communication Studies as the lone blind student among 2,119.
Despite getting print materials, he succeeded academically and placed first in his class, showing tremendous dedication.
Mapfumo started his studies with seven Ordinary Level topics at Kapota School for the Blind and 10 Advanced Level points from Pakame High School in Zimbabwe. After gaining a certificate in education, he taught, but he continued his studies by getting his bachelor’s degree.
His wife, Finance Makota, read, recorded, and translated his notes into Braille for his education, helping him succeed. Despite his disabilities, she supported him with transportation so he could participate in conversations and write tests.
Mapfumo thanked his wife for transcribing his Braille homework for his instructors, which helped him succeed academically. He recognized the financial burden of paying his expenses without outside help while juggling employment, schooling, and family, including his four school-aged children.
He said his accomplishment took twice as much work as his able-bodied peers. Mapfumo told disabled people they can achieve great things with persistence and hard work.
