The Veterinary Council of Nigeria has officially shut down the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Benin in Edo State, citing the institution’s failure to meet required standards for operating Veterinary Medicine programs.
This development was confirmed by Dr. Aishatu Abubaka-Baju, the President of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria and an Assistant Inspector General of Police.
Dr. Abubaka-Baju made the announcement during an interview at the 60th Annual Congress of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, held in Jos, Plateau State.
She explained that a recent evaluation found the program at the University of Benin non-compliant with the council’s standards, leading to its closure and a halt to new student admissions.
In contrast, the council granted interim accreditation to the University of Abuja’s Veterinary Medicine program and will reassess it in two years to ensure continued compliance with necessary standards.
