Nigerian Government Suspends 13 Students from Federal Unity College, Enugu Over Bullying Incident
The Nigerian Federal Government has suspended 13 students from the Federal Unity College (FUC) in Enugu for six weeks following a bullying incident that went viral on social media. The Ministry of Education announced the suspension after a disturbing video surfaced, showing students involved in the assault of a fellow student.
According to Folashade Boriowo, the Director of Press and Public Relations for the Ministry of Education, the Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, ordered the suspension after the video, which showed the bullying of a day student in SS1 on November 7, sparked widespread concern. The incident led to the formation of a disciplinary committee tasked with investigating the matter.
Dr. Alausa emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring a safe learning environment in all federal schools. He pointed out that the video and subsequent report highlighted serious safety concerns at the school. As a result, the 13 students involved were placed on a six-week suspension while investigations continue.
In addition to the suspension, the Minister ordered the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to collaborate with security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, including examining any external influences on the bullying incident.
The Ministry has also taken immediate steps to strengthen security at the school by involving law enforcement and reviewing safety protocols.
