The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Taraba State University has declared an indefinite strike, halting academic activities and ongoing exams. The decision follows unresolved grievances, including unpaid salaries, unimplemented allowances, and the lack of a governing council.
Garba Mbave, the union’s chairperson, made the announcement after a congress meeting in Jalingo, citing issues such as unpaid salaries, the absence of a functional pension scheme, and salary arrears from the 2022 nationwide ASUU strike. Additional concerns include the non-implementation of the national minimum wage, non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances, and the failure to approve a 35% salary increase for professors with corresponding adjustments for other academic staff.
Mbave emphasized that despite repeated efforts to resolve these issues through negotiations, the government’s inaction has left the union with no choice but to strike. He stated that the union did not intend to disrupt examinations or inconvenience students but saw the action as necessary to secure justice for its members.
