The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command successfully rescued a 4-year-old boy, Hope Evans, abducted from a school in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and reunited him with his mother after arresting the suspect in Abuja.
FCT Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh reported that Hope was reported missing by his mother, Ms. Lydia Jonah Gabriel, on October 31, 2024, after he failed to return home from the community primary school in Azube, Port Harcourt.
Investigations revealed that a suspect, Blessing Okoi, allegedly lured the boy away from the school premises by offering him biscuits and eggs. The abduction went unnoticed by the school management.
Ms. Lydia raised the alarm after discovering her son was missing. Efforts to locate him led the family to learn that the suspect, known locally as “Destiny’s mum,” had fled the area the same night.
The Trans Amadi Police Station initially handled the case before transferring it to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
The victim’s sister contacted the FCT Police Command when suspicions arose that the suspect had traveled to Abuja.
Acting on this information, FCT Commissioner of Police CP Olatunji Disu directed a swift investigation. Police operatives tracked the suspect to Maraba, Abuja, where they apprehended her on November 29 and rescued Hope Evans at 8 p.m.
The suspect initially claimed to be Hope’s mother but gave conflicting information. Ms. Lydia traveled to Abuja and reunited with her son on November 6, 2024.
The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and urged citizens to report suspicious activities promptly.
