From School Dropout to PhD: Laikipia University Graduate’s Inspiring Story

Pamela Mukami Gitu, a 35-year-old educator from Thika, Kiambu County, has become one of Kenya’s youngest PhD holders after earning her doctorate in Applied Linguistics from Laikipia University.

Despite not being an A student in her early education, Mukami’s journey serves as an inspiring story of resilience.

Mukami, a tutor at Murang’a Teachers Training College, specializes in the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). She shared that her path to success was not easy. She had once dropped out of primary school due to excessive corporal punishment, but she returned to complete her education.

In secondary school, she achieved a C+—her best result at the time. Despite not excelling academically early on, she credited hard work and resilience for helping her achieve the milestone of a PhD. Mukami also acknowledged her father as her greatest inspiration for encouraging her to persist, even when faced with academic struggles.

Mukami began her tertiary education at Kaimosi Teacher’s Training College in 2007, earning her teaching certificate in 2009. She went on to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at Laikipia University in 2013, followed by a Master’s degree in 2016.

After a brief break for motherhood, she resumed her studies and completed her PhD, proving that determination can overcome even the toughest challenges. Mukami’s story continues to inspire many, showing that academic success is attainable through perseverance and hard work.
