Her journey of leadership and progress continues to inspire transformation across Africa.

Born in Cape Coast, Professor Opoku-Agyemang earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Cape Coast and advanced her studies with a Master’s and Ph.D. in English Literature from York University, Canada.

In 2008, she became the first woman to serve as Vice-Chancellor of a public university in Ghana, the University of Cape Coast. She advanced gender equity and spearheaded significant infrastructure improvements during her tenure.

Her political career began in 2013 when she was appointed Minister for Education under President John Mahama. From 2013 to 2017, she led transformative reforms, building modern schools, providing free textbooks and uniforms, and eradicating makeshift schools.

In 2020, she made history again as the first woman nominated as a vice-presidential candidate by a major political party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Though the election was not successful, it paved the way for her future achievements. With the NDC’s recent electoral victory, she has assumed the role of Vice President, a landmark moment in Ghana’s history.

Beyond politics, Professor Opoku-Agyemang remains a dedicated advocate for education and gender equality. She actively combats gender-based violence and uplifts marginalized communities.
