27-yearold becomes first African-American youngest Poet Laureate

As Nebraska’s first African-American and younger-ever Poet Laureate, 27-year-old Jewel Rodgers has created history. Her unusual selection emphasises her outstanding contributions to literature and poetry.

Announcing Jewel’s choice, Governor Jim Pillen hailed her exceptional talent and artistic commitment.
An official poet assigned by a government or organisation to produce writings for particular festivals and celebrations is known as a Poet Laureate.

Renowned for her emotional depth and cultural influence, Jewel’s work has won her this esteemed accolade. Jew attributes her love of poetry to her parents.

Jewel said, she works quite hard. “My mother always respected my voice and talent, even if none else did.” Jewel Rodgers excels in performance, novelist, and poet.

She presented three TEDx speeches and has been nominated three times for the Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards. Audiences all throughout the country are enthralled by her presentations at public events, conferences, and colleges.

Jewel, a teaching artist with the Nebraska Writers Collective, supports the transforming power of poetry and mentors upcoming poets. Over her five-year term, Jewel wants to support young involvement, poetry, and Nebraska-based writers and artists.

“I appreciate you identifying my gift. I find great honour in this. Using this platform, I want to raise as many voices as I can’, Jewel remarked during her victory speech. Johnny Rodgers, her father, showed great joy during the announcement event. “That’s amazing. Jew has put out great effort for this. Her success shows that anything is achievable with will.

Jewel is also quite gifted intellectually. She graduated from New York University with a master’s degree in Real Estate Development and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Jew’s narrative is evidence of tenacity and enthusiasm, which motivates many others to follow their aspirations.
