At the 2024 Ghana National Chess Championship, 14-year-old Philip Selikem Amoako, a chess prodigy from Ghana, became the youngest national chess champion in history. Philip’s exceptional talent and poise were on display throughout the competition, which took place at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra from January 2 to January 5, 2025.
Philip outperformed foreign competition with an undefeated 7.5/9 score, defeating seasoned pros, including a chess master, in a 10-player round-robin style.
At the age of 11, Philip first attracted national notice in 2021 after taking home a silver medal from the African Youth Chess Championships. As a result of his achievement, he became the youngest Ghanaian to be named Candidate Master.
In addition to his accomplishments in chess, Philip is a well-rounded person who enjoys both cerebral and athletic endeavours. He balances his mental and physical development by playing lawn tennis and training with Ghana’s national athletics squad.
Philip has had the honour of meeting some of the best chess players in the world, including as Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Ding Liren, and Magnus Carlsen. During the London Chess Classics, he was privileged to initiate the ceremonial first move between Carlsen and Vachier-Lagrave, solidifying his position as an emerging chess star.
As he continues to motivate future chess players throughout Africa and beyond, Philip intends to participate in international competitions and obtain scholarships to fund his studies.
