A remarkable person from the Agagagugu compound in Koto Ile Eja, Beere, Ibadan, Oyo State—a region notorious for its drug problems and other social issues—Ibrahim Abiola Taiwo recently made headlines when he earned three Master’s degrees from esteemed UK universities: Bournemouth University, the University of Nottingham, and Manchester Metropolitan University.
Ibrahim, a proud University of Lagos (UNILAG) alumnus, discusses the motivation behind his academic career despite his modest upbringing. He gave a reporter some insight into his journey.
Ibrahim holds master’s degrees in data science from Bournemouth University and electrical engineering from the University of Nottingham. He is a recently qualified nurse who graduated with honours from Manchester Metropolitan University. He previously graduated from UNILAG with a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering. He gained the analytical and problem-solving abilities required for providing patients with high-quality care thanks to this multidisciplinary education.
Ibrahim, who comes from a neighbourhood in Ibadan known for its social problems, credits his maternal grandmother’s upbringing in Isale-Alfa, Ibadan, with helping him develop his tenacity, humility, and diligence. These principles have influenced his path and strengthened his belief in Allah’s plan, inspiring him to use his nursing profession to make a constructive contribution to his community.
How He Acquired Three Master’s Degrees
Ibrahim demonstrated his dedication to multidisciplinary learning by successfully completing three Master’s degrees in various fields over the course of five to six years. He earned an MSc in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, an MSc in Adult Nursing, and an MSc in Electrical Engineering for Sustainable and Renewable Energy. His broad experience enables him to make contributions in a variety of fields while he gets ready for a rewarding career in healthcare.
He was able to succeed in these challenging fields because of his excellent time management skills and unquenchable intellectual curiosity. Completing these degrees is evidence of his commitment to excellence. Ibrahim wanted a secure and comfortable life from a young age, not only for himself but also for his future generations. His maternal grandmother’s conviction that education was the key to success motivated him to pursue lifelong learning in order to protect his family’s future from poverty.
Ibrahim’s childhood dreams changed over time. At first, his mother discouraged him from pursuing his dream of becoming a soldier. His grandmother expressed similar concerns when his goals later shifted to becoming a pilot. In the end, his parents supported his education because they hoped he would become a doctor. Mentors who recognised his potential in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, however, encouraged him to pursue engineering as he found his passion for conquering obstacles.
Ibrahim’s mother’s sacrifices for his education strengthened his resolve to succeed, despite his family’s concerns about the dangers of his chosen career, particularly those of his late maternal grandmother, who expressed her concerns for his safety.
Ibrahim developed a strong desire to improve healthcare after losing family members, particularly his maternal grandmother, whose passing brought to light the inadequacies in his community’s healthcare system. He became motivated to advocate for healthcare awareness and easily accessible treatment after witnessing his community’s dependence on herbal remedies, or “Agbo,” for severe illnesses.
While earning his MSc in Adult Nursing, Ibrahim encountered many difficulties, especially juggling work, school, and family obligations. He managed to balance part-time work, lectures, and placements while taking care of his family as a father of two and a pregnant wife. He lacked outside funding, unlike many students, and frequently forewent personal necessities in order to handle his money.
Additionally, there was little time for relaxation due to the pressure of clinical placements, exam preparation, and academic deadlines. It took a lot of preparation and endurance to balance studying, working nights, and taking care of the family. He felt overpowered, but he persisted because of his faith and determination. There were a number of difficulties associated with moving from Nigeria to the UK, such as adjusting to new cultural norms and educational systems. He had to unlearn and relearn a lot of concepts because he was starting over in the nursing field, which was completely unfamiliar to him.
Despite making these difficulties worse, the emotional toll of lost loved ones stoked his enthusiasm for medicine. Ibrahim’s journey is a prime example of perseverance, with his faith being essential to his ability to stay stable and focused. During tough times, his wife, family, and mentors were a vital source of support. In order to manage his complex life, he underlined the significance of goal-setting, prioritisation, and effective time management.
Ibrahim continues to be proud of his accomplishments in spite of the numerous obstacles, seeing each one as a chance for personal development. However, he still has two master’s degrees pending: an MSc in Power Engineering and an MSc in Materials Science and Engineering.
