The Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has been threatened with closure by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) until its vice-chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, is suspended due to accusations of sexual harassment, extortion, and administrative malfeasance.
Fasina is accused of making unwanted approaches by Engr Folasade Adebayo, a married deputy director at the university’s Directorate of Works and Services. Comrade Akinteye Babatunde, president of the NANS Senate, issued a warning: unless the Governing Council acts, students will organise across the country to close the university on its convocation day.
The Governing Council responded by announcing a nine-member committee to look into the claims, promising an open and objective procedure. The charges, however, have been rejected by Fasina’s legal team and a civil society coalition as unfounded, politically driven, and intended to damage the Vice-Chancellor’s image.
Adegboruwa and Co., Fasina’s solicitors, stressed that prior police investigations exonerated the VC of all charges, including financial impropriety and sexual harassment. They attacked media organisations for disseminating false information without asking the university’s administration for clarification.
However, NANS contends that the accusations breach ethical standards and erode confidence in academic leadership if they are not addressed. Additionally, the student body accused the VC administration of neglecting to prioritise cheap education and extorting students through part-time programs.
As interested parties await the inquiry committee’s conclusions, the atmosphere is still tight.
