After being accepted to study physics at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), 13-year-old Melchizedek Adio Baafawiise has drawn a lot of attention. After performing exceptionally well on the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), receiving five A1s and three Bs, the former St. Cyprian’s Minor Seminary SHS student reached this noteworthy milestone.
“By my third or fourth year, I’ll decide whether to specialise in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering,” Melchizedek added, describing his decision to pursue his interests in Physics. His accomplishment comes after Ruth Gyan-Darkwa accomplished a similar feat in 2017 when she got accepted to KNUST to study mathematics at the same age.
On social media, the announcement of Melchizedek’s acceptance has received more than 1,000 likes and 100 comments, indicating widespread celebration. Now pursuing a PhD, Ruth Gyan-Darkwa complimented him and encouraged him to maintain his motivation and focus. “I know he can do it,” she said.
Users of social media also expressed their opinions:
- Pakar Erst suggested, “A dual-degree program in Mathematics and Physics would be fantastic, followed by a Master’s in computer or electrical engineering.”
- Emmanuel Ninvoee, a former teacher of Melchizedek, described him as “a great lad” and wished him well.
- Bawa Wakaso celebrated, saying, “You are at the best university in Africa. Alhamdulillah.”
His academic achievements were widely commended, but some questioned the wisdom of putting young children in demanding university programs. “Is it appropriate to put so much pressure on young children?” enquired Awine Evans Azure.
“I don’t know why it’s always KNUST that these 13-year-olds go to,” Felix Sabobo Ativor said, highlighting the trend of young prodigies being admitted to KNUST.
As Melchizedek starts his academic career, his accomplishment portends a bright future. He is ready to inspire people while pursuing his goals in engineering and physics with the help of his family, mentors, and well-wishers.
