Ghanaian student stabbed shortly after new part-time job in Canada

Just one week into his part-time work at mining supplies company DSI Underground Canada, 23-year-old Ghanaian international student Alfred Okyere was violently stabbed in Saskatoon, Canada, on January 20, 2025. Alfred was living with his sister, Lydia Obeng, after coming to Saskatoon in September 2024 to study computer science.

A 53-year-old coworker reportedly attacked Alfred during a work break, stabbing him 17 times in 30 seconds. Around 8 p.m. CST, emergency personnel arrived on the site, took Alfred to the hospital, and declared him dead.

Saskatoon police quickly caught the culprit as he ran from the scene. Members of the Major Crime Section are investigating the incident thoroughly, and the purpose for the attack is yet unknown. Alfred’s sister, Lydia Obeng, expressed her shock and grief over her brother’s untimely death.

Concerns regarding the safety of international students in the area have been raised by the Ghanaian community in Saskatoon, which has also expressed sadness over his demise.
