A dedicated Nigerian guy named Ujah Godswill has finally been awarded a scholarship to study in the United States after four years of tenacious efforts and numerous rejections.
Godswill recounted his inspirational story on LinkedIn after graduating from Ladoke Akintola University of Science and Technology (LAUTECH) with a brilliant 4.72 First-Class GPA in Crop Production and Soil Science.

He described the difficulties he encountered, including cold emails, cold applications, shortlisting without being chosen, and unsatisfactory interviews, all of which caused him to doubt his desire to pursue graduate work. He persevered and never gave up in spite of these obstacles.
Receiving a Graduate Research Assistantship to pursue a Master of Science degree in Environmental Science at Kentucky State University in the United States was the ultimate reward for his perseverance. Godswill discussed the most important lessons he discovered when reflecting on his journey:
- Rejection is merely a part of the process and does not define your value.
- Create a solid support system by surrounding oneself with guiding and supportive individuals.
- Don’t stop living while you wait for possibilities; instead, keep developing and getting better.
- Timing is crucial; sometimes success strikes out of the blue and being qualified is insufficient.
- Faith is vital—he attributed a significant portion of his trip to divine assistance.
Godswill conveyed his appreciation to his parents for their steadfast faith in him, his siblings for their prayers, his LAUTECH instructors for their guidance, and his friends, churchgoers, and others who assisted him with applications, visa procedures, and practice interviews.
To with similar challenges he offered words of encouragement: “Your dreams are valid. Keep going; your success is closer than you think.”
