Being the first Black valedictorian in more than ten years is a noteworthy accomplishment for Nnamdi Ezenwa, a gifted Nigerian who has created history at Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law.
Nnamdi, who was born and raised in the United States by Nigerian parents, started his studies at Idaho University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing. After that, he followed his dream of becoming a lawyer and enrolled at Thurgood Marshall School of Law, where he graduated with honours in 2020 with a Juris Doctor (JD).

Nnamdi became the first Black and Nigerian student to be named valedictorian of the school in 13 years as a result of his exceptional academic achievement.
In addition to being a stellar student, Nnamdi was involved on campus. He was an editor for the Thurgood Marshall Law Review, a member of the African Law Students Association, and a member of the Honour Court.
Nnamdi reflected on his historic accomplishment and said he hoped his triumph would serve as an example for others. “My family and I have always relied on academics. To be acknowledged in this way is an amazing feeling. I went for my legal degree to be a good example to others—to show that everything is achievable with effort and commitment,” he said.
Nnamdi took the Texas Bar Exam soon after graduating. He maintained his focus on his objective in spite of the uncertainty around the exam’s scheduling. After several hours of focused study, he was overjoyed to find out in October 2020 that he had passed the Texas Bar Exam and was now a certified lawyer in the United States of America.
Nnamdi has a positive outlook on his law career and is incredibly appreciative of the help he has gotten along the way. “We have all faced many challenges this year, but I am thankful for the blessings and have hope for the future,” he remarked.
“I am incredibly grateful to my mentors, instructors, friends, and family for their unwavering support during my journey. “The Marathon Goes On,” he continued.
