NYSC cites lack of Funding as The Cause of N77,000 delay.

In response to the continuous delay in enforcing the new N77,000 minimum salary for corps members, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has blamed inadequate resources for the delay.

The NYSC claims that the lack of the appropriate “cash backing” to start payments is the reason for the delay in distributing the updated allowance.

On Monday, March 3, 2025, NYSC spokesman Caroline Embu acknowledged that the monies are still pending, as reported by The Punch.

After criticism from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Embu responded to mounting worries by saying, “The cash backing is still being awaited.”

Months after the Federal Government authorised the pay raise in July 2024, NANS criticised the NYSC for still paying corps members the antiquated N33,000 allowance.

National Vice President for Inter-Campus Affairs, Sileola Akinbodunse, spoke on behalf of NANS and expressed dissatisfaction over corps members receiving only N33,000 for their February allowance rather than the N77,000 that was promised. He pointed out that the NYSC administration has not offered a convincing justification for the ongoing hold-up.

Given that other government workers have already started to get their higher pay, Akinbodunse called the situation unjust. NANS has requested that the Federal Government examine NYSC’s wage adjustment management and begin a probe into the reason for the delay.

Akinbodunse continued, “The NANS leadership will also speak with NYSC officials directly to find out why corps members have not yet been paid the new N77,000 minimum wage, particularly since NYSC employees are already enjoying the increase.”
