Jay L. Cunningham is the first African American to receive a PhD in Human-Centered Design and Engineering from the University of Washington, making history in the process.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Alabama, Jay started his academic career. He studied for a Master of Science in Human-Centered Design and Engineering with a Human-Computer Research concentration at the University of Washington because he was passionate about investigating the nexus between technology and human interaction.

Jay was adamant about pushing the limits of creativity and inclusivity, so he pursued a doctorate—an undertaking that would go down in history.
In a LinkedIn article, Jay reflected on his accomplishment and emphasised its significance as an inspiration for upcoming academics, characterising the milestone as personally personal. During his doctoral studies, he served as a Regent at the University of Washington, which further differentiated his trip.
Jay expressed gratitude to his family, friends, mentors, coworkers, and the larger community for their support, which helped him get through his ten-year academic career.
Jay, who was raised in a tiny rural Mississippi town, attended East Mississippi Community College for his first college education before going on to obtain several degrees in computer and information science. His commitment to creating inclusive and moral technology is demonstrated by his dissertation, “Methods of Designing Justice-Oriented Interactive AI Systems.”
In the future, Jay hopes to carry out more research in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and responsible, human-centered natural language processing (NLP), working to develop more just and equitable technology systems.
