The Kano State Government has proclaimed a tough stance against sexual harassment in schools, warning that any teacher or school personnel found guilty of harassing pupils will face instant dismissal and full legal prosecution.
Ibrahim Sumaila, Governor Abba Yusuf’s Senior Special Assistant on Student Matters, made this news at a press conference after a stakeholder meeting hosted by the Centre for Awareness on Justice and Accountability (CAJA).

“As an Islamic state, we will never tolerate the mistreatment of our daughters. Sumaila firmly declared, “Any teacher who crosses that line will be removed and prosecuted.”
Additionally, the government reiterated its backing for non-governmental groups that are trying to protect kids and improve the educational system.
A six-month campaign to eliminate sexual harassment in educational institutions by advocating for clear internal procedures in secondary and tertiary schools was launched at the CAJA-led gathering. Kabiru Dakata, Executive Director of CAJA, claims that students are at risk because many schools lack official policies regarding sexual assault.
“We’re turning our attention to doable institutional improvements after years of advocating for national law. Instead of reporting abusive teachers, many victims suffer in quiet or leave school, according to Dakata.
He pointed out a significant weakness in school support systems by pointing out that pupils frequently don’t know where to report problems.
A legal expert who spoke at the event, Barrister Maryam Ahmad Abubakar, described sexual harassment as any unwanted behaviour that creates a dangerous learning environment, whether it be verbal, physical, or psychological. She emphasised the significance of encouraging moral and religious education and teaching professionals and students about boundaries.
Stricter sanctions for offenders, changes to entrance and employment age regulations, and the inclusion of values-based education in school curriculum were among the forum’s main proposals.
In order to promote greater knowledge and prevention of sexual harassment, CAJA also intends to provide instructional materials, host awareness workshops in schools, and empower survivors as advocates with the support of the Nigerian Women’s Trust Fund and other partners.
