USA — At Sebastian River High School in Texas, 18-year-old Jayden Hughes, an African American-Hispanic student, has made history by becoming the school’s first Black valedictorian in its 27-year history. He had a remarkable 4.67 GPA and a 1410 SAT score when he graduated.
Jayden’s path wasn’t always easy. He remembers getting a “B” in a ninth-grade course and a 62 in algebra in seventh school, which motivated him to put in more effort. More than anything else, that B humbled me. You can’t be flawless all the time,” he said.

Since then, Jayden has consistently received As and taken on a demanding course load:
Nine classes in the junior year, including one Advanced Placement (AP) course and six International Baccalaureate (IB) courses.
Senior Year: One AP course, six additional IB courses, plus dual enrolment at a nearby college.
Excellence in Extracurricular Activities and Academics
Along with his scholastic accomplishments, Jayden:
held the position of National Honour Society President.

worked 20–24 hours a week as a part-time employee at Publix.
obtained a Certification as a Biology Technician via the Career & Technical Education program at his school.
He credits his family’s sacrifices for his accomplishment. For my family, this is. I am who I am now because of their struggles,” Jayden remarked.
Jayden has been admitted to prestigious universities, such as
University of Florida
University of Miami
Florida State University
Duke University (his dream school)
