A 19-year-old who walks to Graduate gets a Car and Scholarship.

Corey Patrick, who is only 19 years old, has shown an incredible dedication to his studies, recently receiving a full scholarship and a brand-new automobile as a reward.

When a bus driver in Alabama took a moving picture of Corey wearing his graduation cap and gown and walked by himself to board a municipal bus on his way to high school graduation in 2018, Corey became well-known around the country. “You tell me this ain’t determination…,” the driver said, complimenting Corey’s resolve. I was really pleased with this young man!

Over the years, Corey stuck to a strict schedule, rising at 4:30 a.m. to begin his long commute to Tarrant High School, where he had attended since fourth grade. He overcome the difficulties of distance and travel without a car after moving to the West End to live with his mother, Felicia White.

Corey had extra difficulties getting home after school because he had to walk more than a mile each morning to get to the bus stop. Even though he occasionally didn’t return until after six o’clock, his determination remained unwavering. According to his mother, “Corey had to be at the bus stop by 5:41 a.m. and was getting up at 4:30 a.m.” He would occasionally arrive home after 6:30 or 7 p.m., but even after school, he would have to wait until 5:19 p.m. for the bus back.

Unfazed by the lack of transportation, Corey put on his cap and gown and went about his everyday business as usual to attend the ceremony on graduation day. He told WBRC, “I had to do what was necessary for me to walk this year.” “I was just excited that today was the day I was going to walk the stage and get my diploma when I woke up that day,” Corey said.

Supporting messages poured in as pictures of Corey’s voyage became viral online, especially from comedian Rickey Smiley, who invited Corey to his radio show. There, he revealed that Corey would be getting a brand-new vehicle, and Smiley helped him get his driver’s license with the support of his staff at 95.7 Jamz.

Corey excitedly announced on the show that he has received a full scholarship to Jacksonville State University, where he intends to study programming and computer science.

“I thank you all for the support, and just know that I appreciate you all,” Corey said, reflecting on his amazing trip and expressing his deep gratitude for the love he received. It really “Takes A Village.”
