Education has no age restrictions, as demonstrated by Sade Ajayi, who overcame the odds at 50 by enrolling in junior secondary school to learn to read and write.
Sade, who is currently a Junior Secondary School 2 (JSS2) student at Ilorin Grammar School in Kwara State, worked in her aunt’s shop as a child instead of going to school, and she later started her own business sewing and selling handbags and bags. Her inability to read and write, however, made managing her business difficult and ultimately prompted her to pursue her goal of becoming an educator.

Sade wears her school uniform with confidence and participates completely in lessons, answering questions and interacting with younger pupils despite being almost 40 years older than her peers. Despite her initial embarrassment, her daughter has grown to respect her mother’s tenacity and now fully supports her path.
Sade continues to run her business despite her scholastic obligations, with the assistance of an assistant during school hours. In the hopes of strengthening her business acumen and perhaps paving the way for her to become a teacher, she intends to finish at least four more years of schooling. Sade is adamant about proving that it’s never too late to learn and excel, even in the face of criticism and despair.
