Out of intense annoyance with Nigeria’s labour market and economic conditions, a Nigerian graduate publicly burned his NYSC certificate and university degree, setting social media on fire both literally and symbolically.
The young man, whose identity has since gone viral, admitted in a video that he spent seven years pursuing his degree but only received a second class lower, with a GPA of 3.4, which is only 0.1 points below the 3.5 required for a second class upper. He claimed that the near-miss plagued him for years, making him feel unlucky all the time.

When his aspirations to becoming a musician didn’t work out, he moved to the business sector. During a recent job interview, however, he was offered a monthly salary of 95,000 naira, of which 60,000 would be used for transportation alone, shattering his hopes of stability.
Frustrated, he made a bold statement by burning his NYSC and academic credentials, claiming that the gesture was a relief from the weight of unmet expectations and a dysfunctional system.
In the video, he said, “No regret.” “You would become insane in this country.”
Online, his acts have sparked intense reactions. Others caution against making such irrevocable decisions in times of despair, even if many share his suffering and the hard reality that Nigerian youngsters must face.
The widely shared video keeps sparking discussions about Nigeria’s job, education, and mental health care systems.
