A Man Protests University’s decision to Reject his PhD Application.

A Nigerian man has been upset that his PhD application was denied by a private university because he did not take specific courses in his WAEC exams.

He disclosed in a post on X (previously Twitter) that he was considered ineligible because he had missed WAEC topics, even though he had a strong academic and professional background.

I recently made the decision to enrol for a PhD (my second concurrent) at a private university in Nigeria in an area I have been working in since 2015.

They informed me that I would not be eligible because I did not study specific courses in WAEC,” he wrote. He compared this to his experience overseas, where his previous education and work experience led to his acceptance into a comparable program and even the transfer of certain credits.

“To put this into perspective, I have four degrees from universities, I am in my 18th year of full-time employment, two-thirds of which have been in senior leadership positions, and I have even given lectures in this area.”

However, I must either finish two postgraduate degrees or go back in time and write WAEC, where I would probably be the one describing the practical applications of what they are teaching.

He remained very interested in getting the degree in spite of the setback. His article generated a lot of conversation, with many people criticising the strict policies of the Nigerian educational system.

  • @olufisayooduz: “The Nigerian system is flawed in every way. It would have been hard for me to get a master’s degree here without PGD, but I was able to do it elsewhere.
  • @AyoBankole: “NUC’s antiquated structure is at the heart of the problem. To fix this system, we need a leader who is committed to reform.
  • @sposhbaba: “Even though I already have a foreign diploma in international relations, a university told me I had to write WAEC in order to study it.”
  • “Reminds me of when I applied for a residency as a licensed dentist and they requested my transcript from primary school,” said @Oyin_xO.
  • @AEAdeola: “Youth development is being impeded by NUC policies.” Why would someone who has already received training and experience require WAEC again?
  • @tjawiee: “It’s past time for our educational system to undergo a comprehensive revamp. Despite multiple consultations and modifications, the current structure is still out of date.

Discussions about the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the necessity of educational reform in Nigeria have been rekindled by the circumstances.
