A Nigerian lecturer Joins the RantChallenge To Laments Difficulties.

Under President Tinubu’s leadership, a Nigerian university lecturer has joined the trending #30DaysRantChallenge, exposing his challenges as a government employee after buying a used car.

After purchasing a 2004/2005 Toyota Corolla, the lecturer disclosed in a post on X (previously Twitter) that his senior lecturers and colleagues started to wonder how he could afford it. Many thought they wouldn’t be able to afford the car even if they saved for a year or two on a lecturer’s wage.

He wrote:

I purchased a 2004/2005 Corolla two years ago. Despite its age, it is kept up nicely. Talk about how I could afford it began as soon as I brought it to school.

He clarified that despite having saved for two years, he still need help from his mother and a coworker to finish the purchase. But while working as a project organiser, there were rumours that he had embezzled funds from students. He thus lost his job.

The instructor also bemoaned the financial difficulties faced by university employees, emphasising how even senior lecturers are currently impacted by rising petrol costs.

My coworkers, including senior ones, now wait every day at the school intersection in the hopes of finding a ride to campus due to the increase in fuel prices. There is hardly any money left over for meals or monthly household needs when you fill up your car with our pay cheque.

Many people expressed their opinions about the status of academics and the Nigerian economy as his post gained popularity:

  • @CroBender: “But university professors will rig elections to get certificate forgers into office, and I’m supposed to sympathize?”
  • @adebomiiiii: “The fact that a lecturer buying an old Corolla is a shock says a lot about our economic reality.”
  • @ekpotek: “I can relate. The only thing keeping many lecturers afloat is scholarships and external grants.” @oluopey: “No lies here. I’ve been there. I bought a 1998/1999 Camry as an assistant lecturer, and people still talked.”
  • @mrmanjustdoit: “The real issue is the devaluation of the national currency. Purchasing power has dropped drastically.”
