A Nigerian receives First-Class From Petroleum Engineering.

With a remarkable first-class degree and a CGPA of 3.72 out of 4.00, Ubaydah Abdulwasiu, a driven and intelligent Nigerian student, has become the best graduating female student at the University of Ibadan’s Department of Petroleum Engineering.

On LinkedIn, Ubaydah shared her experience, which was based on growth, self-discovery, and resilience. She wasn’t a top student at beginning. Despite her best efforts, she received a dismal C in physics and a GPA of 3.36 in her first semester. She was devastated by the outcome.

She suffered emotionally for weeks before turning inside, asking more experienced students for advice, and reminding herself that the race was far from finished. She learnt to take better care of her health, rearranged her schedule, and stopped pushing herself to work too much. She also experienced difficult financial difficulties and lost her savings to a swindle during this time, but she persisted.

Ubaydah improved in her second semester, not just in her grades, which rose to 3.58, but also in her attitude.

She maintained her focus, attended MSSN tutorials, stayed close to university for virtual lectures, and often studied with her housemate despite pandemic disruptions and academic union strikes.

Her perseverance started to pay off. Her CGPA increased to 3.74 by the conclusion of her second year. She dabbled in tech writing and software engineering outside of the classroom and even assisted others in removing distractions so they could concentrate on their objectives.

The third year presented fresh difficulties. She had a difficult time readjusting to academic life after returning after a protracted strike. Her CGPA dropped a little, but she recovered well and kept it at 3.72.

She faced additional challenges in her final year. As her department’s general secretary, Ubaydah juggled leadership duties with internships, research, and business ventures. Despite the increasing pressure, she persevered by relying on group study sessions with her peers. She received seven A’s out of eight in her most recent semester.

She thought back on the hardships, triumphs, late hours, and sacrifices that moulded her as she stood at her induction into the engineering profession. She was filled with deep appreciation at that very time.

As Ubaydah embarks on a new chapter, she aspires to do so with purpose, influence, and unwavering faith, prepared to face the world one step, one prayer, and one daring move at a time, just as she has always done.
