A Nigerian Succeeds in the UK, receives a Master’s Degree.

A bright Nigerian woman named Eziamaka Nwakile has made significant progress in the UK, graduating with honours from her master’s program and landing a lectureship at Coventry University.

In 2014, Eziamaka earned a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from Girne American University in Dubai, where she started her academic career. She enrolled in Coventry University’s master’s degree in Data Science and Computational Intelligence in 2022 because she was determined to further her education, and the following year she graduated with honours.

There were difficulties along the way. She had travel issues and was forced to spend the night in a hotel because her bank cards were blocked when she arrived in the UK during Storm Eunice, one of the worst storms in decades. She had a difficult beginning, but she soon adjusted to the demanding academic setting.

Coventry University’s block teaching approach, which required students to finish full modules in a single week of intense six-hour sessions, was one of the main obstacles. She also encountered discouragement from some who questioned her capacity to excel in the rigorous curriculum. Instead of caving in, she thrived by using their scepticism as inspiration.

Surprisingly, I worked extra hard and received a distinction in my graduation! Thank you to everyone that questioned me! I was inspired to work harder by your words,” she posted on LinkedIn.

As the Faculty of Computing, Mathematics, and Data Science’s Education Rep Chair, Eziamaka assumed leadership responsibilities outside of the classroom. She balanced her obligations with her education by working as a Student Ambassador.

Her perseverance paid off when she was hired as a lecturer at Coventry University two months after graduating. She was formally offered the position following a demanding interview process that took longer than anticipated. Another noteworthy accomplishment in her academic career was the publication of her master’s dissertation as a chapter in a book on Springer.

“Exciting times indeed—from reading other people’s research to having my own work published alongside professors’ contributions!” she said.

Eziamaka thanked her parents, siblings, and academic advisor for helping her make the transition from student to lecturer and for supervising her dissertation.

She highlighted her love for student mentoring, academic advancement, and making significant contributions to her area as she reflected on her journey, characterising it as both rewarding and hard.
