
Kayode Adewale, a Mathematics, Information, and Science Technology teacher in Ogun State, has been named one of the top 50 contenders for the coveted $1 million Global Teacher Prize.
Adewale, who teaches at Imaka/Imagbon Comprehensive High School in Odogbolu Local Government Area, Ogun State, has received acclaim for his unique teaching methods and commitment to educational progress. In an interview, he spoke about his journey, accomplishments, and plans for the prize money if he wins.
Adewale is a teacher, scientific educator, and the founder of his school’s Space Exploration Club. His efforts to promote creativity and learning have earned him countless accolades.
In 2020, he was voted the Best Senior Secondary School Teacher in Ogun State, receiving a ₦2.5 million reward from Governor Dapo Abiodun. He spent a portion of his award to refurbish his school’s multifunctional laboratory, converting it into a STEM lab for both kids and instructors.
In 2023, he received recognition as Nigeria’s third-best teacher. He has also participated in notable international programs, such as the Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program in the United States and the Limitless Space Global Educators Program in Houston, Texas.
Adewale, who was granted the Global Teacher Prize, plans to use the money to fund meaningful educational initiatives. He detailed his plans:
- 20%: A capacity-building program for the top ten finalists in the Global Teacher Prize.
- 20%: Raising awareness of the Global Teacher Prize throughout Africa.
- 10%: Supporting kids in Nigeria’s underprivileged neighbourhoods.
- 10%: Establishing an innovation hub at his school in Imagbon Ijebu, complete with cutting-edge technology, to inspire kids and illustrate education’s transforming power.
- 40%: Creating technology-assisted instructional management systems and carrying out his “Transformation 1,090” program, which intends to train ten teachers in each of Nigeria’s 109 senatorial districts.
Adewale’s unique initiatives have encouraged other Ogun State teachers to form Space Exploration Clubs in their schools, in partnership with the Limitless Space Institute in Houston, Texas.
