Cynthia Umezulike is a distinguished Nigerian lawyer and human rights advocate who has obtained two master’s degrees and a doctorate from UK universities—quite an accomplishment.

After a remarkable academic career, Cynthia received her doctorate in law from Birkbeck, University of London. She graduated from Igbinedion University in Nigeria with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) before being admitted to the Nigerian Law School to practice law as a barrister and solicitor before the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

She subsequently pursued two master’s degrees in law: one at Queen Mary, University of London, and another at the University of East London, focusing on international law and criminal justice (LL.M.).

Cynthia celebrated her accomplishments and said she looked forward to getting her doctorate in person because she completed the program during the pandemic. She underlined that the graduation ceremony gave her a sense of pride and enabled her to end this phase of her life gracefully. Cynthia also said how appreciative she was of her father, who supported all of her academic pursuits.

Cynthia taught law at Birkbeck University and served as the Global Head of Legal and Governance while pursuing her PhD. Her father was there for her no matter what, making sure she had the greatest life possible and supporting her emotionally, mentally, and intellectually. Cynthia said it was because of his sacrifices that she was able to live a self-sufficient and forward-thinking existence.

She also expressed her gratitude to her friends and coworkers for their emotional support during her PhD program and for travelling with her to conferences around the world and PhD contests.

Cynthia said that she is enthusiastic about the future and the opportunities that lay ahead, adding that her journey is still ongoing.
