With the coveted Chevening Scholarship, Ugandan educator Rabecca Chelangat will be able to study for a Master of Arts in International Education and Development at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. Chelangat’s accomplishment highlights her commitment to fair and high-quality education, since she has a solid experience in teaching and advocating for refugee education.
For the past seven years, Chelangat, often known as Becky, has worked with refugees in Northern Uganda, using mainstream and adult education to fight for their rights. She pursued her studies in international education and development because of her dedication to guaranteeing educational opportunities for both host communities and refugees.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office funds the Chevening Scholarship, which pays for living expenses, travel, and tuition in full. The fact that Chelangat was chosen as a recipient demonstrates her outstanding academic credentials and commitment to educational change.
Chelangat graduated with a 3.65 GPA (Second Class Honours, Lower Division) with a Bachelor of Arts with Education from Makerere University in Uganda, where she concentrated in English Language and Literature.
Her current academic endeavours are directly related to her undergraduate studies, which gave her a solid foundation for her work in refugee education. Chelangat used the University of Sussex’s website to get advice when applying, especially on how to write an engaging personal statement. She was excluded from taking English language competency examinations because she had finished her studies in the language.
According to Chelangat, applying for a Chevening Scholarship is an extremely difficult procedure that calls for a significant investment of time, effort, and research. She acknowledged the tremendous aid she received from Uganda’s Chevening officers, scholars, and alumni in the form of webinars and mentorship, which enabled her to improve her essays. She also stressed how crucial it is to get input from others in order to enhance the calibre of her application. Chelangat claims that a major factor in her success was her genuineness.

Rather than drawing generalisations, she concentrated on expressing her own experiences and enthusiasm for education. Her application was interesting since she was able to clearly express her effect and future goals. Chelangat reflected on her experience and said she would actively seek advice from other scholarship recipients and offer herself more grace if she were to go through the process again. She encouraged potential candidates to have confidence in themselves, approach the application process with a strong sense of resolve, and utilise the resources and mentorship opportunities that are available.
She underlined, “Do it as if your life depended on it because nothing will be done if you don’t do your part.” “You will only find opportunities if you take the first step, but there are a lot of them out there.”
Aspiring students can draw inspiration from Chelangat’s accomplishment, which shows that international educational opportunities are accessible with commitment, sincerity, and tenacity.
