Abdulbaki Yusuf, 24, breaks a record at a Nigerian university and becomes the first-ever first-class mechanical engineering graduate.

The 24-year-old student Abdulbaki Yusuf created history at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), Nigeria, by being the first-ever graduate to receive a first-class degree in mechanical engineering

As the top graduating student in his department, Yusuf also received recognition for his outstanding total grade point average of 4.79.

Yusuf said in an interview with Intel Region that he had been a stellar student since elementary school and had even attended secondary school on scholarship. He credited prayer, self-discipline, devotion, and commitment for his academic accomplishment. Yusuf stated, “I was determined to achieve First Class honours from the day I was admitted to study Mechanical Engineering.” “I am honoured to be the first-class Mechanical Engineering graduate at UDUS with a CGPA of 4.79.”

Yusuf talked about his intense study schedule, adding that he would study for an extra three to four hours at night on typical school days. He raised his study time to 12 or 14 hours a day during examinations. Yusuf encountered many difficulties despite his commitment, such as severe weather, budgetary limitations, and obstacles in his academic career. “It was hard at first to get used to the severe weather in Sokoto, especially during the harmattan and dry seasons,” he remarked. “Money problems were a never-ending battle, frequently limiting my food options to little more than water and biscuits. A major obstacle was also the absence of previous exam questions for reference.

Yusuf acknowledged that he was able to overcome these challenges because of his family’s support. He didn’t let the challenges deter him from pursuing his academic objectives.

In addition to his studies, Yusuf participated actively in extracurricular activities. He was a member of the Ilorin Emirate Students Union’s board of trustees at UDUS and the Nigerian Universities Engineering Students’ Association (NUESA), UDUS branch, serving as the organization’s sports director.

In the future, Yusuf hopes to attend Texas University in the US to pursue a master’s degree. His career goals include working as an engineer in both government and commercial companies and lecturing at universities. In the end, he wants to open his own engineering company so that he may train up future engineers and advise them, advancing the engineering industry.
