African Scholar Gets Two PhDs in Five Years on Two Continents.

Mamosa Ngcala, a gifted African scholar, has accomplished a remarkable academic achievement by receiving two doctorates in five and a half years, one from Germany and one from South Africa.

Mamosa started her education at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Microbiology in 2015. She later graduated from the University of the Free State in 2018 with a Master’s degree in Plant Biotechnology.

At the University of Cape Town, she started her first doctoral studies in cellular and molecular biology in 2019 with a focus on microbiology and biochemistry. She took advantage of an academic exchange opportunity two years into her program and enrolled in a second doctoral program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Potsdam in Germany.

Mamosa persisted in the face of overwhelming obstacles, such as pandemic disruptions and severe self-doubt. Her successful completion of both PhDs by 2025 is an uncommon and noteworthy achievement.

On LinkedIn, Mamosa reflected on her journey and talked about the intense emotional challenges she encountered, including feelings of failure, depression during the COVID-19 lockdowns, and intense frustration. She attributed her success to her faith, inner fortitude, and community support.

“I am not the only one with this doctorate. She wrote, “It belongs to everyone who walked this road with me,” thanking her partner, family, friends, coworkers, and supervisors before praising God for seeing her through.

From winning scientific contests to presenting her research on global stages, Mamosa’s journey was more than just academic; it was a stirring tale of bravery, development, and unwavering faith in a dream.
